Pecan



Pecan, nut-bearing tree (Carya illinoensis) of the walnut family native to North America, a member of the genus that also includes the hickory. It has furrowed bark and groups of long, thin leaflets. The tree, which grows up to 180 ft (55 m) high, takes 10 years to become a prolific nut-bearer. Nuts are harvested from both wild and orchard pecan trees. The tree is also valued for its wood, which is used for flooring and furniture.
