Palmyra

Palmyra, ancient city in central Syria. Prominent as atrading center, Palmyra prospered under Roman rule and reached its height (A.D. 30) as an independent state under Queen Zenobia. In 273 it was largely destroyed by the Romans under Aurelian; more than a century later it was sacked by Tamerlane. Imposing ruins remain.
