Paiute



Paiute, several Native American tribes of the Shoshone group. They can be divided into the North Paiute, of northern California and Nevada, and the South Paiute, of Arizona and southern Nevada. The Paiute ghost dance religion, which began c.1870, led by the prophet Wovoka, led to violent uprisings against white encroachment. Today about 4,000 Paiute live on reservations.
