Paisley



Paisley (pop. 203,400), industrial city in western Scotland near Glasgow, on the White Cart River. A medieval village that grew up around an abbey, Paisley became a center for linen weaving in the 18th century. In the 19th-century it was known for its manufacture of paisley shawls. Its industries now include engineering, shipbuilding, and food processing.
