Ozark Mountains

Ozark Mountains, plateau of rugged beauty in southern Missouri, northern Arkansas, and northeastern Oklahoma. The highest peaks in the region, the Boston Mountains in the south, do not reach over 2,350 ft (716 m) above sea level, and the St. François Mountains in the east are less than 1,800 ft (550 m). Taum Sauk in the St. François range is the highest point in Missouri at 1,772 ft (540 m). The heavily forested hills and mountains of the Ozark region are thinly populated. Farming and mining (lead, limestone) are the region's major economic activities. Tourists are attracted by the scenery and clear air.
