Osteopathic medicine



Osteopathic medicine, method of therapy that concentrates on manipulation of bones and muscles, developed in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still. The musculoskeletal system is focused upon to treat the whole person rather than an isolated region. Osteopathic physicians are fully qualified to use surgery and all medications as part of their medical care. In the United States, there are 15 osteopathic colleges, 180 osteopathic hospitals, and over 28,000 osteopathic-practicing physicians.
