Oslo



Oslo (pop. 473,300), capital, largest city and chief seaport of Norway. Founded c.1050, it was rebuilt after the great fire of 1624. Known as Christiania or Kristiania from 1625 to 1925, today Oslo is Norway's chief commercial and industrial center, producing chemicals, paper, textiles, and wood products. The hub of Norways's railroad system, Oslo is also serviced by an international airport located just outside the city. Home to Norway's oldest university, the city also features many fine museums, including the Norwegian Folk Museum and the Viking Ships Museum (which displays Viking ships that date back to the 10th century).
