Orpheus

Orpheus, in Greek mythology, renowned musician of Thrace. Son of the muse Calliope, he could tame wild beasts with his lyre playing. After the death of his wife, Eurydice, Orpheus sought her in Hades. He was allowed to lead her back to earth providing he did not look at her, but he could not resist the temptation, and Eurydice vanished forever. He was regarded as the founder of the Orphic mystery cult, which saw both good and evil in human nature, and followed a strict ethical and moral code.
