Ombudsman



Ombudsman, official appointed to investigate complaints by citizens against government officials or agencies. The office originated in Sweden in 1809 and since 1955 has been adopted by Denmark, New Zealand, and Britain. In the United States ombudsmen operate in some states and localities as well as within businesses and other organizations.
