Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City (pop. 454,000), capital of Oklahoma, on the North Canadian River. It was founded on April 22, 1889, when that portion of Indian territory was first opened for white settlement. For the landrush some 10,000 people set up tents in the region that day. Incorporated in 1890, it became the state capital in 1910. Oil was discovered in 1928, and the city's large reserves of crude oil and natural gas have made it a major petroleum production area. Industries include farming, ranching, building materials, aircraft production, and electronic and communications equipment.
