Niobe

Niobe, in Greek mythology, daughter of Tantalus and wife of Amphion, and a figure of eternal sorrow. Queen Niobe, who had 12 children, claimed that her child-bearing powers were greater than those of the goddess Leto, who had only 2 children. Leto punished Niobe for this boast by having all of her children slain. The gods, pitying the grieving queen, turned her into a weeping rock, which, according to tradition, is on Mt. Sipylon in Turkey.
