Ningbo

Ningbo, or Ning-po (pop. 468,200), formerly Ninghsien, port city on the Yung River in northern Zhejiang province, eastern China. In 1843 Ningbo became one of 5 Chinese ports open to foreign trade. Although nearby Shanghai is now the more prominent center of international trade, Ningbo remains a major commercial and manufacturing center for the region. Textiles, food processing, shipbuilding, and machine production are among its chief industries.
