Saint Nicholas

Nicholas, Saint, 4th-century patron saint of children, scholars, merchants, and sailors, traditionally identified with a bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. In many European countries he is said to visit children and give them gifts on his feast day (Dec. 6). The custom was brought to America by the Dutch, whose Sinterklaas became the Santa Claus of Christmas.
