New London



New London (pop. 266,819), seaport city of southeastern Connecticut, at the mouth of the Thames River, near Long Island Sound. A commercial and distribution center, it is the seat of the United States Coast Guard Academy and also has a U.S. Navy submarine base and the home of the U.S. Underwater Sound Laboratory. Its manufactures include clothing, paper boxes, antibiotics, toothpaste, and food products. It is the home of Connecticut College (1911). Founded by John Winthrop (1646), New London was a whaling port and has whaling and art museums.
