New England Confederation

New England Confederation, alliance organized in 1643 by representatives of the Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven colonies. They formed “the United Colonies of New England” to settle boundary disputes and arrange “mutual safety and welfare.” Intercolonial rivalry undermined the confederation, and it was dissolved in 1684.
