Dominion of New England

New England, Dominion of, separate colonial government within the colonies established in 1686 by King James II, controlling Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Plymouth, and Rhode Island. Used to further English control of the American colonies, this government was resented by colonists and abolished with the overthrow of King James U (1688).
