Banyan tree

Banyan tree, sacred tree (Ficus bengalensis) of India, related to the fig. It grows up to 100 ft (30 m) high, and its branches send down aerial roots that form new trunks on reaching the soil. An individual tree can thus become a dense thicket of intertwined stems and secondary trunks covering an acre or more.
