Bald eagle



Bald eagle (Haliaetus leucocephalus), only native North American eagle, national bird of the United States since 1782. About 3 ft (90 cm) long, with a wingspan that may reach 7 ft (2 m), it is black, with white feathers on neck, tail, and head. A member of the hawk family, it preys on fish and is protected as an endangered species in all states.
