Bald cypress, common name for a family (Taxodiaceae) of evergreens with wood cones and needlelike or scalelike leaves. The common bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), the state tree of Louisiana, is prized for its wood and may be found in swamps and wetlands of the United States, from Texas to New Jersey.
