Austin



Austin (pop. 492,300), capital of Texas and seat of Travis County on the Colorado River in south-central Texas. Founded in 1839 as Waterloo, it served as the capital of the Republic of Texas 1840–42 and was renamed in honor of Stephen F. Austin. It became state capital in 1870. Austin has seen great industrial development since the 1930s, currently is the site of extensive scientific and electronic research, and is also the center of an important agricultural, ranching, dairy, and poultry region.
