National Gallery of Art

National Gallery of Art, U.S. museum of nationally owned works of art, opened 1941 in Washington, D.C. as a branch of the Smithsonian Institution. The initial collection was donated by Andrew Mellon (1937). The gallery possesses Jan van Eyck's The Annunciation and Raphael's The Alba Madonna; it includes many works by Italian, French, and American artists.
