National cemetery

National cemetery, any of a system of burial places operated by U.S. government agencies for the deceased of the U.S. armed forces. Of the 127 national cemeteries, 50 are filled, and spouses or dependent children who wish to be buried there are often placed directly above or below the deceased veteran. Best known are Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., where John F. Kennedy is entombed, and the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pa., part of the Civil War battlefield.
