Nagasaki



Nagasaki (pop. 439,100), city on western Kyushu Island, Japan, capital of Nagasaki prefecture. A major port on the China Sea, it has been a foreign trading center since 1571. In World War II about 75,000 residents were killed or wounded and much of the city was destroyed when the United States dropped the second atomic bomb (Aug. 9, 1945). Today shipbuilding is the city's major industry.
