Muskellunge



Muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), the largest fish of the pike family. Most muskellunges are 2 1/2–4 ft (6.4–10.2 cm) in length and 5–36 lb (2.3–16 kg) in weight. Its slender body may be brown, gray, green, or silver with dark bars or spots on the side. A distinctive feature of the muskellunge is the absence of scales on its lower head. The muskellunge is solitary and carnivorous. It is found in southern Canada and northern United States. A strong fighter, the muskellunge is sought for sport and food.
