Philip Murray



Murray, Philip (1886–1952), Scottish-born U.S. labor leader. He was president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) from 1940; prominent leader of the United Mine Workers, 1912–42, and organizer and head of the United Steelworkers from 1942. In 1949–50 he helped rid the CIO of communist unions.
