Atalanta, in Greek mythology, beautiful, swift-footed huntress who promised to marry any suitor who outran her, but to kill any she could beat. She lost to (and married) Hippomenes, who, helped by the goddess Aphrodite, had dropped 3 golden apples that Atalanta paused to pick up.
