Assault and battery

Assault and battery, any threatening physical act that reasonably causes another person to fear bodily harm or offensive contact. If there is actual contact, the crime is called battery. One may have assault without battery, but any case of battery necessarily includes assault. Assault and battery may be either a felony or a misdemeanor, depending on the degree of seriousness.
