Assam



Assam (pop. 22,414,300), state in India located in the extreme northeast of the country and connected to the rest of India by West Bengal. To the north it is bordered by Tibet and Bhutan and to the east by Burma. The rugged land is drained by the Brahmaputra River. The climate is subtropical and rainfall varies from 70 in (178 cm) to more than 400 in (1,016 cm) per year. Tea is the main commercial product, and about 90% of the population is engaged in agriculture. Assamese is one of the official languages of India.
