Aspen

Aspen (pop. 3,678), town in south-central Colorado and seat of Pitkin County. In the late 19th century, Aspen (originally Ute City) was a flourishing silver-mining town, but its prosperity declined when ore deposits were exhausted. Located in the Rockies, at an altitude of 8,000 ft (2,438 m), it has become a year-round resort, with world-famous skiing facilities and a noted summer cultural festival.
