Arnhem



Arnhem (pop. 134,700), capital of the province Gelderland in the east Netherlands, located on the north bank of the Rhine River, about 60 mi (100 km) east of Rotterdam. A major river port with shipyards and a large tin refinery, Arnhem produces textiles, furniture, leather goods, and synthetic fibers. The city was seriously damaged in September 1944, when it was the site of one of the largest Allied paratroop landings in World War II.
