Ark of the Covenant

Ark of the Covenant, wooden chest, overlaid inside and out with gold, containing the original Ten Commandments. The Ark was the most sacred religious object of ancient Israel, for the divine presence was believed to dwell within. It was installed in Solomon's temple but disappeared after the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.
