Arachne



Arachne, in Greek mythology, mortal so expert in weaving that she challenged Athena to a contest. Arachne's tapestry, which depicted the foibles of the gods, angered the goddess, who tore it up. Arachne hanged herself in despair and was transformed into a spider.
