Corazon Aquino

Aquino, Corazon (1933–), first woman president of the Philippines (1986–92). The widow of slain Philippine opposition leader Benigno Aquino, she was the major opposition candidate in the 1986 presidential elections. The National Assembly—controlled by supporters of President Marcos—declared Marcos winner of the election, although there were major signs of fraud. After rioting broke out, Marcos left the Philippines on board a U.S. plane, and Aquino was recognized as president.
