Ankara



Ankara (pop. 2,559,500), capital of Turkey and of Ankara province in Asia Minor. It produces textiles, cement, flour, and beer, and trades in local Angora wool and grain. Ankara (formerly Ancyra or Angora), once a Hittite trade center, later became capital of a Roman province in 25 B.C. It replaced Istanbul as Turkey's capital in 1923.
