Andrada é Silva, José Bonifácio de (1763–1838), Brazilian geologist and statesman, known as the father of Brazilian independence. He helped create an independent monarchy under Pedro I, whom he served as prime minister (1822–23) until exiled for his democratic views. He was later tutor to Pedro II.
