Agra



Agra (pop. 891,800), historic city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which is situated on the Jumna River, 110 mi (177 km) southeast of Delhi. An important military and commercial center, it produces cotton, grain, raw silk, sugar, and rugs. It was the capital of the Mogul empire during the late 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. The city has several beautiful and important Mogul buildings, including the Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan.
