Adonis



Adonis, in Greek mythology, beautiful mortal beloved of Aphrodite and Persephone. In an effort to resolve the problem of who would keep Adonis, Zeus commanded that he spend 6 months of every year on earth with Aphrodite, during which crops flourished, and 6 months in the underworld with Persephone, during which the earth was barren. This myth was used by the Greeks to explain the changing of the seasons. In another myth, Adonis is killed by Aphrodite's husband who is disguised as a boar.
