Aachen, also Aix-la-Chapelle (pop. 243,200), city and spa in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. A major industrial center producing machinery, textiles, and chemicals, it is also the site of mineral springs frequented since Roman times. The emperor Charlemagne built a palace and cathedral in the city.
