(1921–2000), Not Prince Hamlet

British biographer and translator, born in London, educated at Oxford University. From 1947 to 1950 he was a visiting lecturer in English at the University of Uppsala, where he learned the Scandinavian languages. He wrote two major biographies, of Ibsen (2 volumes, 1967, 1971) and of Strindberg (1985), and also translated many of their works for the stage. His memoirs, Not Prince Hamlet (1989), record his long and lively involvement with British theatre and his own ‘love affair with Sweden’.
