Harold Brighouse Biography

(1882–1958), The Northerners, Zack, Hobson's Choice

British playwright; he was the son of a Manchester businessman, and became the best-known exponent of the realistic drama associated with the repertory seasons at the city's Gaiety Theatre. He wrote The Northerners (1914), Zack (1920), and nearly twenty other plays, the best of them notable for the entertaining characterization of often oppressive and domineering Lancashire people; but, as he himself admitted in his autobiography, his reputation came overwhelmingly to depend on one only, Hobson's Choice (1915).
