Chuckwalla (Sauromalus obesus), lizard of the North American desert. Stoutly built and 1 ft (30 cm) long, it ranges from Arizona and Utah to northern Mexico, feeding on the flowers and leaves of desert plants. During the summer it lives below ground, and when alarmed it retreats into crevices, wedging itself by blowing up its body.
