Wladyslaw Gomulka

Gomulka, Wladyslaw (1905–82), Polish communist leader. As first secretary of the Polish Communist Party (1956–70), he encouraged social and economic freedoms for Poles while maintaining close ties with the USSR. He resigned following food price riots.
