Dugong, or sea cow, (Dugong dugong) seal-like aquatic mammal found around the coasts of the Indian Ocean from Madagascar to Australia. Dugongs live in family groups, feeding on the leaves and roots of sea plants, which they root up with their thick, bristly lips. Hunted for their hide, meat, and oil, their numbers have been greatly reduced.
