Panda, either of 2 Asian mammals anatomically similarto raccoons and each having an unusual sixth digit on each hand. This digit has evolved to thumblike size and flexibility in the giant panda of central China (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), remaining vestigial in the red, or lesser, panda (Ailurus fulgens), found in the Himalayas and the mountains of western China and northern Burma. Though they have evolved from carnivores, both pandas are vegetarians. The giant panda, resembling a bear, with its predominantly white body, black ears, limbs, and eye patches, weighs from 200–300 lb (90–140 kg).
