American science fiction writer, born in Bisbee, Arizona, educated at Eastern New Mexico University and the University of Colorado. From the pulp fiction of his early years he has remained active in the field of science fiction since 1928. Space operas like The Legion of Space (1947) were soon succeeded by thoughtful explorations of the nature of human participation in the universe, such as Darker Than You Think (1948), The Humanoids (1949), Lifeburst (1984), and Demon Moon (1994). He frequently collaborated with F. Pohl.
