Stephen Romer Biography

(1957– ), Idols, Plato's Ladder, The Growing Dark

British poet, born in Bishop's Stortford, educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Idols (1986), his first full collection of poetry, attracted wide critical notice. Derek Mahon's commendation of Romer's ‘emotional candour and intellectual clarity’ summarizes the essential qualities of his work. Plato's Ladder (1992) further demonstrates his ability to express intimate and intense personal experience while retaining the impress of a complex and erudite sensibility. He has also produced translations, including The Growing Dark (1981), his versions of poems by Jacques Dupin.
