William Humphrey Biography

(1924–97), The Last Husband and Other Stories, Home from the Hill, The Ordways

American novelist, born in Clarksville, Texas. Humphrey's first work of fiction, The Last Husband and Other Stories, was published in 1953; his novel Home from the Hill (1958) was a best seller and was made into a film. His fiction is very much associated with his native Texas; both Home from the Hill and his later novel, The Ordways (1965), are preoccupied with Texan history and culture. The Collected Stories of William Humphrey (1976) brings together the best of his short fiction; other novels of note include A Time and a Place (1968) and Proud Flesh (1973).
