Sue Grafton Biography

(1940– ), Keziah, Lolly Madonna War, Is for Alibi, Is for Lawless

American crime writer, born in Louisville, Kentucky, educated at the University of Louisville; she is the daughter of C. W. Grafton, attorney and mystery writer. She published her first novel, Keziah, in 1967, the Lolly Madonna War (1969) was filmed in 1973, and from 1977 she wrote TV film scripts. By 1982, Grafton was a twice-divorced mother of three children who conceived ‘AIs for Alibi (1982) in preference to murdering her ex-husband. She has now reached ‘LIs for Lawless (1996) in her award-winning ‘alphabet’ series that has helped transform the predominantly male preserve of American crime writing. With Sara Paretsky, Grafton has become one of the genre's most popular female writers. Her tightly paced mysteries are shaped by Kinsey Millhone, a feisty, self-sufficient private investigator who is appealingly candid, with a wry wit.
