Irish poet, born in Dublin, educated at Trinity College, Dublin. One of the foremost women poets in Ireland, her collections of poems include New Territory (1967), The War Horse (1975), In Her Own Image (1980), Night Feed (1982), The Journey (1987), Outside History (1990), and In a Time of Violence (1994). Her Selected Poems (1989) demonstrated the range of interests and tonalities in her work, which accommodates traditional Irish themes, incisive commentaries on contemporary subjects, and intimately personal poems of relationships and womanhood. Boland's prose works include the critical study A Kind of Scar: The Woman Poet in the National Tradition (1989), and the autobiographical Object Lessons (1995).
