Ruth Bidgood Biography

(1922– ), Chambers Encyclopaedia, The Given Time, Not Without Homage, The Print of Miracle, Kindred, Lighting Candles

Anglo-Welsh poet, born in Seven Sisters, near Neath, Glamorgan; after reading English at Oxford, she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service and subsequently worked for Chambers Encyclopaedia in London. The Given Time (1962), her first collection of poetry, was followed by Not Without Homage (1975), The Print of Miracle (1978), Kindred (1986), Lighting Candles (1982), and Selected Poems (1992). Her poetry displays a recurrent concern with her surroundings in Abergwesyn, Breconshire, where she has lived since 1960. In much of her work, imaginative and emotional content is deftly interfused into treatments of topographical, social, or historical aspects of the locality.
